It's official. All of the rumblings, all of the rumors, all of the no-trade clause arguing...it's all behind us and Giancarlo Stanton is officially on his way to the Big Apple to wear the pinstripes and will never make a curtain call in Miami again.
And I don't know how to feel about it.
I absolutely love Giancarlo Stanton. Any guy that breaks scoreboards and mashes the ball like that is a fun guy to watch. Stanton was one of the few guys that you actually cheered for when he came to your park. He's the guy from the opposing team that you'd sit and watch, silently hoping to yourself that you get to see him knock one into the next state, even at the expense of your team. It didn't matter. He's entertaining and everyone loves him. Or at least, loved him.
On the other hand, the Yankees are on the other side of the scale. The Yankees are the true heels of the MLB. People love to hate them. Pointing to the obnoxious fans, the constant reminders of 27 titles, having ever single digit number retired, or the farewell retirement tours that Yankees have made popular, there are lots of reasons to hate the Yankees. Everyone that isn't a Yankees fan was extremely satisfied to see them lose in Game 7 to the Astros last year. Because it's always better to see the team you hate get their hopes up before it finally comes crashing down. Any time you can make a grown man that looks and acts like this sit down and shut up, it's amazing.
But now, that guy has even more bravado than ever. One of the most liked and popular players in the MLB is being sent to one of the most hated franchises. The Yankees have a new Murderers' Row with Stanton, Judge, and Sanchez. And I don't know what to do with myself. For the record, this is the second time in 2017 that the Yankees have traded for a player that I liked. Back in July, they acquired hometown favorite Todd Frazier in a trade with the White Sox. And back in 2014, the Yankees traded to get Didi Gregorius, another guy that is just fun to watch.
I'm torn up. On one hand, people will tell you that as soon as these guys become Yankees, fuck 'em. And I can understand that. They are joining the dark side. It rips out your heart. But on the other hand, these guys specifically came into the Pinstripes because of trades. They didn't CHOOSE to join the dark side. It was chosen for them.
So I can still like Stanton, and Frazier, and Gregorius...for now. But once they become free agents and then opt to sign with the Yankees, they are dead to me.
Until then, I will pull for Stanton, Frazier, and Gregorius to have great seasons and put up fantastic numbers...but then the Yankees lose every game because Aroldis Chapman blows the save 162 times. Because...fuck Chapman.
